I have an issue getting a Moschip MCS7830 USB Ethernet adapter working on my Ubuntu server 12.10 installation. I'm quite sure the adapter is fine, since I tested it on an Ubuntu desktop installation (also 12.10) where everything worked out of the box and the new device was showing under ifconfig. I can't get the same under the server variant: ifconfig only displays the PCI based Ethernet adapter (and the loopback lo).

Running lsusb lists the device:
ID 9710:7830 MosChip Semiconductor MCS7830 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter

ifconfig doesn't. Am I missing a setup step here?

Have you tried ifconfig -a?

If it doesn't show up there, review your kernel log with dmesg or in /var/log.

Thank you for the help, blip. It had to be that obvious The interface was not configured and so it was down (available from ifconfig -a). Configured it and it's now working. Thread solved.
