Have to re-setup networking each reboot

Hi there,

A bit of (OK, total) Linux n00b, I'm currently playing around with an Ubuntu Server setup.

I currently have installed:
  • Ubuntu Server (Hardy)
  • Ebox
  • Ubuntu Desktop (for the interface, I'm a command-line n00b too)

which can all control my network set up in some way. It seems that I can set my network up and get it working (it was static when in my office, now DHCP at home) by using nano to edit the files, but whenever I reboot, it all needs setting up again. I can always access the server on the local network, but it can't see the outside world until I fiddle.

I understand that there is going to be a conflict between ebox/desktop etc. all having control, but the question is, how to I fix it?

I've only rebooted 5-6 times (being a server) so I'm not sure of the specifics of what happens at reboot, but I think the local gateway gets changed/wiped.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Chris

Are you moving this computer back and forth between work and your home? If not, look at the NIC device setup. If you have DHCP at home, make sure you select auto. One problem could be if the gateway device (router or ebox?) is used as the name server when it doesn't support it. You might also have it configured to not update the IP info that the DHCP server provides. Probably the easiest way to proceed is to delete the device in the configuration and then add it again. That will delete the old config files (such as ifcfg-eth0) that may have static entries, allowing you to start fresh.

If that doesn't work, you will need to provide more particulars. What do you need to manually change? Gateway IP, route, IP address, resolv.conf, hosts file, nsswitch.conf? I'm not really familiar with ebox. Are the changes you mentioned in Ubuntu or ebox? Is ebox used as your DHCP server, NAT router, DNS server? Is it also configured as a proxy for http?
