gftp won't connect to ISP

i wasn't sure if this was a software question or network question, but gftp connects to other sites (ftp.apple.com, ftp.slackware.com, ftp.kernel.org, to name a few that i tried), so i figure the software is okay and it must be something about networking i'm not getting (is there a "user stupidity" forum? ).

anyway, i've been using lftp through the console, and i can connect to my ISP fine, and i can also browse my user directories using ftp:// through mozilla. i've tried both passive and active modes in gftp, and still it refuses to connect (come to think of it, maybe this is a software question ). there's not much of an error message, it only says that it's waiting 10 seconds to try again. the gftp log says the same thing.

what other info can i give? let's see, i have user name and passwd entered, port 21 entered (or sometimes left blank), i've tried both ftp://home.isp.com as well as ftp://user@home.isp.com as well as ftp.home.isp.com, but no joy. as i said, i can use lftp, but sometimes i'd rather just use the gui.

also, on a side note, i don't seem to have regular ftp on my system. it says command not found as user and root and su -, and a search doesn't find any ftp binary. can i install ftp somehow? i searched through the slack packages at slackware.com but didn't see anything that said ftp. i figured it must be integrated into some other package. thx for any help.

You need to use the same server in gftp you use with lftp. So that when you use lftp at the console the command you use to connect to the server should be the server you enter the gftp.

e.g.
If this is how lftp connects:
lftp home.isp.com
Then you would use home.isp.com as the server in gftp.
