Firefox 1.4: server error on google after installing new engine

Server Error

The following error occurred:

[code=SERVER_RESPONSE_RESET] The server response could not be read because of an error. Contact your system administrator.

.....

This from any search via google from the google-bar in firefox. It was going fine until the "ask jeeves" engine was added to the list. Probably reinstalling f-fox would solve this, but what is happening?

(Well OK, I can read - but - wha?)

Naturally googling the error is pointless, and the other engine all work fine (but no luck on the error there either.) Searching the Mozillazine entries got nada, so I'm probably using the wrong search terms.

BTW: Mozilla suite has the same problem now ... have tried no other browsers.

Um ...

help?

Haha! got more info from my ISP by trying to access google via a hyperlink ...

The following error occurred:

* 500 - Connection to remote site failed

when trying to access http://www.google.com/linux

This response is generated when the cache server could not successfully contact the remote server.

If this is the only site you cannot access, then it is almost certainly caused by the remote site being offline for some reason. Unfortunately there is little that can be done about this except to wait and try again later when the remote server admins have hopefully fixed whatever is wrong.
Is google experiencing problems tonight? It pings OK.
