filter traffic within the LAN

If I wanted to filter traffic using a linux server (iptables) from one computer to another within the lan, what would be a good option?

Would using VLAN be a good choice? For instance, isolating the computer to which I'd like the traffic to be filtered by placing it into another vlan. Would inter-vlan routing be a good choice here?
