Please help. This seems pretty strange. I just installed Fedora 2.
Brief:
My KPPP connects to the net but is not recognized. I have to connect by using network configuration tool, adding my modem as a device and then activating it. This works fine. But I'm so used to KPPP, esp with the auto redial if line dropped.
Detail:
Have been using red hat 7, 8 & fedora1 for quite a while. I'm mostly a gui user, xterm system & networking newbie - i use xterm only to write php & do the sqls.
I've always used KPPP to connect to the internet thru dial-up. And everything was always fine. With Fedora 2, i get connected using KPPP, but my browser, mailer does not recognize that I am connected. I get a "cannot resolve hostname" or "unable to connect to www(dot)whatever(dot)com". Even pinging a hostname does not work. The only thing I can successfully ping is the IP address i get (dynamic) and that of the ISP to which I connect.
I checked the PPP tutorial, but it suggested that there's something wrong on my linux if it works on windoze (and it does work there) and it does not provide much depth.
If i use network configuration tool (gui tool), add modem as a hardware, make my connection as a device, then the internet is recognized. At least I have it working, but I'd like to know what is wrong with KPPP.
Can anyone please help me. I'll get back with any more info if needed. Thanx.
If you can ping an IP address, but can't ping a hostname, I guess the problem is resolving names. Did you try to load any webpage just by IP?
Try this:
Google's IP is (at least one of them): 216.239.51.147
Try to load google on your browser by IP. If it works, the problem is DNS, not modem or network config.
Well, you have to figure out where is your browser trying to resolve names from.
It can be trying to resolve from some local dns daemon (and the daemon is not running, hence the problem). Or it can be trying to resolve from your ISPīs dns server and there can be some misconfiguration.
Why donīt you:
Try to bring up your dns server and see if it solves the problem (in my suse box I would do: rcdnsd start, or via yast2, but Iīm not sure on fedora).
If not, take a look in the configs from your ISP and see if they provide a dns server.
