hi,..i am relatively new to networking in linux. i recently upgraded my old pc so i could connect 2 of my PCs to share files, play games in LAN etc.
one of my PCs runs Vista while i have installed Fedora 10 on the other one. now i want to connect the two in a network so i can share data between them.
i have followed the exact steps but it doesn't seem to work. every time i try to ping 10.2.2.3, i get the network unreachable error.
i have tried completely disabling firewalls of both pcs but i still get the same error so its not a permissions issue.
i have connected one LAN cable between the two Lan ports of both PCs without any other device between. is this the problem? because i have connected 2 windows pcs together earlier with the same method.
either one of the pcs is not detecting the other one.i cannot understand what seems to be the problem.
are there any more detailed guides/tutorials on this?
EDIT:Sorry..Posted in this section by mistake. can any of the Mods please move it to the Linux-Server Forum Please. Thanks
You may be better off buying a cheap switch and putting that between them. That way if you want to add anything else in - a network printer, another computer, you simply have to plug it in.
is using a crossover cable the only option? cant it be done by using a regular LAN cable? because i have previously connected two Windows PCs together with regular LAN cable.is the procedure different for connecting one windows PC and one Linux PC?

Aside from that, what SrDorothy says makes sense.

yes,..that will be the fallback option. but i am curious about other options first.
Whether you can use a regular cable depends on whether or not you NICs are able to auto sense the connection. Newer PC, more likely to be able to. Not an OS issue.
