Exclamation eth0 problem (probably IRQrouting)

OK

so I have a dual boot machine (winXP and RH 7.2)... I have a RealTek 8139 card in my box. In windows, I can use the card and windows immediately notifies me of any connections on the network etc...

BUT

In linux, I cannot even ping the computer on the other side of the line (UTP-5 directly between my box and another box). So briefly: I cannot use the eth0...

At boot time I get the message: "Bringing up interface eth0: [OK]"
In windows my eth0 is located on my IRQ 11 (just like 3 other devices who also use the irq 11)

What am I doing wrong?

P.S.: I already tqried removing the card and having kudzu remove the configuration, and then inserting it again... (and reconfigging it again in kudzu)

Thanks for your time anyway

Thomas,

I had a similar problem with a 3COM card. Like you, I had a dual boot system and the card networked perfectly in Windows 98SE but failed to ping anything in Redhat 6.2. After searching the forum, I found that this card had a problem when Plug N Play is turned on. After turning off PnP, everything worked. I have no idea if this is the problem with your card, but check it out if you have nothing better to try.

Thomas,

You have to turn off the function on the card. In my case, I had to download a utility from 3COM (though it may have been on the intall diskette) and run it from DOS. I think it reflashes the NV memory
on the card with a "no PnP option.

I just did a quick check on this website in the documentation section and found something that may help. Go to http://new.linuxnow.com/docs/content...-5.html#ss5.31 and read the comments on your card. You may need different drivers.

Hope this helps.

Plug-N-Play support is also an option often found in your computer's BIOS. If your BIOS has it, you can try disabling it there.

Also- as jerrymc hinted, you might have a driver issue. Older distros used the rtl8139.o module for your NIC; many newer distros are using the 8139too.o module instead. You might want to check your module and its status with the lsmod command.
Another thing to do is to run ifconfig and see what it reports for the NIC (running ifconfig with the -a option will report on all interfaces, active or not).
