DSL kbs rates, very low, when payed for faster service.

Currently were (me and family) currently paying around 49.99 dollars a month for 768k dsl. Thing is I only get around 70 k max, lower when other ppl are using the net on my network. Im I getting riped off? Or is ther something else, that I shoulda looked into that I didn't?

Speed test

You can use this site to see how fast your connection is. You won't always get the full 768, because of network congestion, as well as other factors. Also, ISP's tend to give speed ratings in kbits, while many browsers give speeds in kbytes. What's the difference? A kbyte is 8 kbits. If this is true in your case, then your max speed in kbytes would be 96k. Let me know if this helps.

generally speaking a dsl line true KB is closer to 10kbits allowing for overhead, so realistically the top speed you could get on a 768kbit line is more closer to 78-80kbytes/sec, my 512 pulls a constant 55kb/s and the 256 link is able to leach at around 27kbytes/sec so if you are getting a maximum of 70kb/s then there could just be alot of noise on your phone line, go to somewhere like dslreports.com and test your link speed with one of their servers.

in theory the maximum speed you could get would be 96kb/sec... thats in theory, i have a 768k connection and get about 90kb max, so really you arent doing too bad.

you could run tcpdump/ethereal to see if you can see anything that might be taking up bandwidth, it might be a problem with the cabling into your house, or a problem at the exchange... give your isp a ring.

you could also be cheeky and use traffic control to throttle the bandwidth other users on your lan get, leaving more for yourself :P
