Domain Name Issue

Hello

I just switched from an ADSL connection to an Cable connection.

Previously, I connected 2 computers through a router to access the internet. One runs Suse 9.1, the other runs Windows XP.

For some reason I cannot get the Suse computer to properly connect to the internet. Noteably, I can surf the internet with the Windows computer.

I did reset the router to rule-out a incorrect configuration; however, that did not rectify the problem as it relates to the Suse device.

There are a couple of key this is observations:
i. The Suse computer successfully obtains an IP address.
ii. It also opens web pages when the IP address is provided as opposed
to the domain name (eg. 66.102.9.104 vs. www.google.com).

When I checked the "status" of my connection on the router I noted that there are 2 DNS Servers listed alongside the IP address.

Given that my Windows XP computer surfs the net just fine, I'm inclined to conclude that the problem rests with the way I have my Suse computer confirgured.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ukee

A friend helped me to solve this problem so I figured it'd be a good idea to post the solution.

In the file /etc/resolv.conf, I needed to add the name of my Domain Name Servers (DNS) from my Internet Service Provider (ISP).

My resolv.conf file has 2 lines in it. They are as follows:
------
nameserver 64.59.144.18
nameserver 64.59.144.19
------

Regards,
Ukee

For future reference, how would you obtain this information? By contacting them?

Contacting your ISP is one way to learn their dns server addresses. Typically, though, this is taken care of through DHCP (auto detection).

The router connects to the internet, and asks for a DHCP lease. The ISP's computer issues an address for the router to use, lets it know a gateway address, and provides the router with one or more dns server addresses.

Next, the computers ask the router for DHCP information. They get issued local, non-routeable ip addresses (you can't route to them from the internet, such as the 192.168.0.0 subnet). They are told that the router is their default gateway, and are issued dns address. Some routers handle the dns themselves, and simply issue their own address. Other's can't, and issue the same addresses that they were handed.

The issue that Ukee had involved that last transaction. His router had accepted the dns information from his ISP properly. Either he had his SuSE box set manually, or there is an issue with either SuSE or his router. Of course, his friend was right in how to manually assign dns servers, so no further harm done.
