1. Internet connection through DSL
2. LAN:
2.1 OpenBSD - firewall, DHCP server
2.2 Readhat 7.3 - local DNS, Samba PDC
2.3 Win98, WinXP (SP2) attached to Samba as domain members
The problem:
All machines on LAN can browse internet without problems
We switched to another mail server (external), and now only the Win98's can perform nslookup queries to that server (mail.*.*) (and receive/send emails).
Neither Readhat machine nor WinXP SP2 (even with firewall switched off on them) can perform (and receive/send emails) this query.
If we make a record in Readhat's "/etc/hosts" or in WinXP's hosts files for that server everything is working ok.
I wonder what could be the problem and how we're to fix it...
Thanks
Question: Is the BSD server the gateway to the Internet?
Question 2: What machine is your DNS server? Are the PCs pointing to that DNS server?
For example, on my network at home, I have a Mepis Linux that serves as the Internet gateway, and it points to my ISP's DNS servers. The PCs within my network point to the Mepis Linux box as their gateway and DNS server.
While Win98 somehow managed to recognize the name "mail.*.*" (and as dig showed that name actually exists in dns), the actual name of the mail server as we needed to call it looked like "*.*", i.e. without the leading "mail"...
