I posted this to the "Software" forum, but feel it might do better here in the 'Networking" forum. Please pardon the duplication.
This is a question about a Slackware 9.1/Gnome desktop set up, with my Linux box & my Windoze box talking to my DSL modem through a small router.
After mucking around with netconfig, I find I'm able to ping my router, ping (for example) Google, and even use a Web browser to get to Google - but NOT as a Web address (
www.google.com), only as a DNS number (216.239.57.104).
If I try to use
www.google.com in the browser, I get the error message that Google "could not be found" - the same for any
www.etc.etc. address I type in the browser.
I know this means my DNS is not set up correctly - but I'm too newbie to know what's wrong. I looked at my /etc/resolve.conf file which is just one line - it goes:
nameserver 152.202.0.85 <----this is Earthlinks DNS # (I think)
In the Linux Essentials book they add two more lines:
domain
search
I used the hostname Labrat, and the domain name home.lnx when I set up netconfig last time. So if I understand properly, I should add the lines:
domain lnx
search lnx
to my resolve.conf file. Is that correct? If so, in what order?
Or is my problem elsewhere? Please help - I'm so $#@! close to getting it finally working...
UPDATE!
It turns out my DNS problem was my own dyslexic fault. I typed the Earthlink DNS as 152..202.0.85 - WRONG! I found the error - it should be
151.202.0.85. When I typed it correctly in the /etc/resolve.conf file, all my DNS probs evaporated. I now am a Webbin' newbie.
