DNS does not find its own name

Hello

I have configured a DNS server but it issues the following error (or warning). Would someone please tell me how can I set a name for it?

Thank you,
Mac

*** Can't find server name for address 123.123.123.4: Timed out
Server: UnKnown
Address: 123.123.123.4

Regards,
Mac

is this an internet address, and are you using a dns server on the internet?

what command or program is generating this error?

David,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes , It is on the internet. And I have used Windows 2000/NT nslookup program to find for example Yahoo's IP addresses.

I had the same problem on a Windows 2000 DNS server when I had not set a reverse dns zone.

Is it nslookup which issues this error or DNS server itself?

If it is nslookup then it may be because nslookup does a reverse lookup on DNS server's name. Is it?

And what is the solution. This error forces windows nslookup to go to alternative DNS servers which have a name.

Regards,
Mac

My hostname is Alpha

That name will not work on mine because it is not a valid internet name.

However if I use my full internet domainname it will work.

Is this your same situation?

I got my full domainname by running tcpdump.
