Cannot find DNS on RedHat 8.0 dialup

I have just installed Red Hat 8.0 on a friend's computer. I used the same CDs to install RH8.0 on my own PC and I've never had any problems. However, after setting up my friend's KPPP (I installed KDE only and not Gnome) to dial-up to his ISP, the DNS did not seem to be working at all.

The DNS servers I checked, were correct. I was online, I could ping other servers and I could visit websites as long as I used IP addresses. But the DNS just refuses to work, although I can ping the ISPs DNS servers from the PC. I used "dig" and it returned with no servers specified. I checked /etc/resolv.conf and the ISP's DNS servers were correctly listed there. I have NO IDEA what to do or what is wrong. Could anyone pls help??

It is a pretty standard installation, with "medium" security settings.

clueless

Not being familiar with RedHat configuration, I can't give you a solution, but can give you a clue:

When pppd makes a connection, it can make changes to your network configuration including your DNS settings. Generally you would want to set your dialler up to use the ISP's default DNS servers.

If you go into setup on kppp, select the account with which you are dialling up and hit edit.

One of the tabs that you see will (should) be DNS. If it's set to automatic, possibly the ISP isn't sending the DNS server addresses through. You can select manual and put them in yourself.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

have a look whether your iptables are blocking DNS.

#service iptables stop

Check if DNS works.

add /edit iptables rules to allow DNS.

Yep I've already done that and it didn't work, which puzzles me. The same IP addresses appear in the /etc/resolv.conf file while I am connected online, but "dig" doesn't work and it won't resolve any web names. This is the second install I've done on the same computer and it keeps giving me this problem and I don't understand it.

Ppuru, I'll try that and see if the firewall is blocking DNS..... thanks.
