DNS-BIND setup

Hello guys,

after 7 years I'm back in the forum asking questions
kindly please indulge me, my linux success 7 years
ago was through guys like you in the forum, thank you all!
(I setup a firewall then ) however now I'm back to square one.
(I'm actually a very newbie, the commands I typed are what I read
on the HowTo's in the Internet)

here it goes:
- I installed BIND for DNS on RH 7.2
* tar xvfz bind-9.2.3.tar.gz
* ./configure
* make clean
* make depend
* make all
* make install
- so far it's been so good, then I run
* ./named -d 1
- check PS AUX and saw that ./named -d 1 is running
- then I tried testing it with nslookup 192.168.0.1 -sil and I get:
;; connection timed out; no server could be reached
- does that mean that my BIND/DNS is not working?
- what do I need to check or modify

please walk me through once more, again many thanks!

Hi:

Its obvious maybe, but have you restarted the entwork?

In Mandrake, its /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

Is there a corresponding reverse lookup record in /var/named?

What does /etc/resolv.conf show? Iie what is the name server?

In Mandrake, there is a directory called /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. In there iis a listing for ifcfg-eth0. You should have something similar in your distro. If all else fails use good old find /* -name ifcfg-eth0 -orint and check it out ...
