dialing in with an Analog dial-up modem

Going back to the old school days ...

I need to setup a linux box with an analog dial-up modem so that:
  • A few remote users can dial into it.
  • Become dial in (DHCP) clients to this linux system.
  • Then they surf the web using this dial up connection.
This linux box has a broadband connection on its ethernet port.
This linux box will have only 1 dial-up modem connected to 1 analog phone line.

I just need to be a tiny ISP to my 2 or 3 remote users.

Is there some application or utility (or distro) that will help me set this up and run it?

See tldp.org and search for information on "ppp dial-up howto" (or was that dial-in?) Anyway, there's information on tldp.org. Exactly how to install certain programs (like mgetty) depends on your particular distribution; just keep that in mind when you read somewhat generic or even distro-specific 'how to' files.

Since you have only 1 modem, only one person can connect at a time; in the bad old days ISPs had "modem banks" - hundreds or even thousands of modems.
