dhcp not obtaining lease on Slackware 10

Hello,

I need to know how to find out more information so I can figure out what is wrong with dhcp not being able to get an ip. Previously, I had it behind a router with a wireless usb adapter and it worked fine. Now I moved it and it is connected through a NIC card and that is connected directly to the cable modem.

Here is what I have done so far.

I have run netconfig setting it up as dhcp.
ifconfig -a shows the mac address but no ip and it is down.
mii-tool shows the card is there
dmesg | grep eth0 shows the card is being recongnized by the kernel

When I try dhcpcd eth0 it hangs and I get no ip

Where is the next step to look to find out in more detail what is going on?
Or if anyone has any suggestions about what could be wrong that would be great too.

Thanks

Hi,

I share my internet connection with my friend who is directly connected to the Internet via cable modem through [Windows Internet connection sharing] .

Recently I connected my linux box directly as he was out...

when he came back he had the same problem as you [unable to obtain lease]..

The problem is at ur ISP side ... call em up and ask them to refresh ur h/w [Mac] address on ur machine .

The guys at My ISP Told me that they had the the old [my mac address pointing to the DHCP ip address they assigned me].. Since I didnt release my old lease...
[ipconfig /release *Con* on windows]

After they refreshed [or released] on their Side [ISP].. My friend was able to get the lease for his dhcp..

Bye!!!
Good Luck...
