Delays getting Linux servers to firewall, Windows OK

Hi,

We recently relocated a lab of about 50 servers, mostly Linux.
The lab is served by 2 Cisco Catalyst 2950 switches, chained together. This used to work fine before the move.

The first destination out of the lab is our gateway address on the lab side of the firewall. Traceroutes show the slowness is on the lab side. But in an odd way, for example hitting the gateway we get:

Windows Servers: consistently 1ms (good, and what we would expect)
SLES Servers: 3-9ms
Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop (configured with static IP) 25-35ms

Im not that familiar with traceroute, but in the longer waits it usually gives the first number and then 2 *'s for the 2nd and third try.

Can anyone suggest an explanation or command I could run to learn more?

thanks very much,
tongar

Hi Tonger.

First things that come to mind:

1)Are the windows and Linux boxes on the same Vlan? If not, the difference is probably in the Vlan config.

2) if they're on the same Vlan, are they all getting IP setup the same way? For example, maybe the windows systems are getting it via dhcp and the linux systems have incorrect manual entries entries. (could also be the other way around) Check to make sure the subnet mask and default gateways are set correctly.

good luck.
