Plug a cable from one to the other. See if lights blink? Usually I try a loopback cable tester.

Did you configure the wireless with a network manager? Does it allow you to select wired also?

Not sure if you have it configured or not at this point.

Hi more info would probably help.

Using mint 18.2 just installed and freshly updated with WiFi.

Thanks for your reply to my query and I will try your suggestion.

I have since however tried my windows laptop with the same result so I'm thinking my router might have issues

So I click my icon on the task bar and my network info pops out with all my network adapters listed but my ethernet is disconnected despite the cable being plugged in. I'm going to try your idea though and see what happens

Disconnected tends to mean it really is disconnected but I can't be sure from your posts yet. Use known good cable and test to another computer maybe. I suspect that your statement of disconnected is really not configured maybe? We will keep trying here.

A nice look into these commands with the cable connected would be awesome:

Code:
ip link show
ip addr show
ip route show
