cannot setup networking!!! ethtool/mii-tool fail

Hi,
Recently i came across a debian based distro - Auditor. I found it interesting and installed it on my new PC (AMD64 3000+ , ASUS A8NVM motherboard) The mobo has an onboard RealTek ethernet card.
But i have been facing problem setting up networking on it. I used both mii-tool and ethtool, but both showed failed results. Following is th snip:
Quote:
LF@Auditor:~$ ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Cannot get device settings: Operation not permitted
Cannot get wake-on-lan settings: Operation not permitted
Cannot get message level: Operation not permitted
Cannot get link status: Operation not permitted
No data available

LF@Auditor:~$ mii-tool
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth0' failed: Operation not permitted
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth1' failed: Operation not permitted
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth2' failed: Operation not permitted
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth3' failed: Operation not permitted
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth4' failed: Operation not permitted
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth5' failed: Operation not permitted
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth6' failed: Operation not permitted
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth7' failed: Operation not permitted
no MII interfaces found
how do i set it up? do i need to compile the kernel again?
