cannot connect with serial modem on fc6

Hi all,

I am facing a problem with fc6 and my modem and I need your help.

I have an external serial modem with the following characteristics:
# 56 Kbps V.92 V.90
# Serial Connection RS232
# V44 V42 MNP2-4

With this modem I was able to connect using fc2 which I had prior to the installation I did during the weekend. (/dev/ttyS0)

I have set the following at the modem commands (using kppp)

Pre-initialization delay: 100
Init String 1: ATZ
Init String 2 :
Post-initialization delay : 156
Dialing speed : 100
Response after initialization: OK
No tone detection : ATX3
Dialing string : ATDT
Connected Response: CONNECT
Busy Response: BUSY
No Carrier Response: NO CARRIER
No tone response: NO DIALTONE
Hangup command: +++ATH
Hangup response: OK
Modem query command: ATA
Ring response: RING Response
Response: CONNECT
DLP response: DIGITAL LINE DETECTED
Escape string: +++
Escape response: OK
Guard time: 255
Mute/low/high volume: M0L0 M1L1 M1L3

But kppp refuses to connect. It stays at Initializing modem forever.

I would appreciate any help

thanx

have a look at either wvdial or pppconfig packages.

They are automatic dialling packages which can build scripts to handle auto connections etc.

Start KPPP.
Click Configure.
Select the Modems tab.
Select the modem and click Edit
Select the Modem tab

What happens when you query the modem ?

Click on Terminal
Type "at"
do you get an "OK"

Hi,

first of all thanx for the response and sorry for my delayed one

Th problem was that I had installed the xen kernel and while booting it was occupying the ttyS0. Thus the modem could not respond.

The solution is simple: At the grub.conf entry I added the following:

title Fedora Core (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /xen.gz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6
module /vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6xen ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet xencons
=off

What I added was the "xencons=off". Now the serial port is not occupied at boot and I can connect via the modem

Hope it helps someone

thanx again
