cannot connect to samba share: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME error

Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new to linux and I'm having trouble connecting to a samba server that has been setup on an ubuntu machine. I've searched the previous threads on this issue but they don't seem to help. The samba server is already working as we can connect to it from other machines (windows and suse). However I'm trying to connect to it from a centos machine and it's throwing me an NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME error. I'm able to list the shares available on the server but I can't connect. It's confusing since the server works with suse and windows. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure which files to post, but if someone tells me, I'll post it.

I can list it with the command:
Code:
smbclient -L NSCOR/data1/MyMatlab -U james
but I can't connect with:
Code:
smbclient //NSCOR/data1/MyMatlab -U james
Password:
Domain=[NSCOR] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.3]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
thanks,
-James

Hi -

Look here for two possible solutions:

Ok, found the problem. At the beginning, I tried to create Samba share thru CentOS' GUI, and attached the users for shares with that. Anyway, it doesn't seem to work quite as I expected; even though the OS users were selected as Samba users for the share, Samba server didn't think so... After doing 'smbpassws -a <username>, it started to work. Voilá.

I had the same problem but the "NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME" error message set me up for failure by leading me down the wrong path looking for a solution. Lost most of a day in the process. For me, the problem was permissions on a directory 2 levels above the one I was trying to share. A simple 'chmod 755 dir' resolved the problem very nicely.

Incidently, I also found that one of the entries in the smb.conf file also caused me problems:

msdfs proxy =

I honestly don't recall whether this was set to 'yes' or 'no' but removal of that line was also necessary to get things working.

Hope that helps someone!
