Can't ping LAN

I'm trying to set up a linux box as a router. I've turned on IP forwarding on the box that I want to route. When I connect another box to it, the green light next to the physical interface doesn't turn on and I can't ping. Why wouldn't the light turn on?

edit: Ok, I tried a cross over cable and that worked.
