Can't get Ubuntu 7.10 to recognize wifi dongle

Is Ubuntu 7.10 supposed to recognize a USB wifi dongle when its inserted, or does the driver have to be installed before hand? Is it supposed to be mounted first? If so, how do I do that? I tried installing the driver from the CD but got the error message "missing destination file operand after 'RTL8187B_linux_24.6'" . What am I doing wrong here?

I guess I'm used to Windows, where it automatically picks up the device and proceeds to install the driver. Thanks.

Unfortunately support for USB WiFi dongles on Linux is not great at the moment. I believe that the 2.6.29 kernel is introducing a whole load of new drivers to support these devices. In the meantime you need to find out the make and model of your card and what chipset it uses and then search for information on the chipset. I believe that an application called ndiswrapper can be used to make many of them work, though my experience of this application is that it can be a bit tricky to get working.
