can't connect

hi
after much trouble i have finally got red hat enterprise v3 installed on a machine that works, however it won't connect to the internet. when i go into the network configuration it shows that the connection from my ethernet connection is active, but it won't allow me to get one the internet. is there anyone out there that knows what could be wrong or how to solve it. i have a cox cable modem and i tried hooking it up directly to the modem and through my hub. i tried turning off the linux firewall. no luck
any help would be a ppreciated.

what does "connect to the internet" mean to you? can you ping host names? can you ping IP's? do you have hostnames in /etc/resolv.conf? do you have a default gateway?
