Can't activate Intel 3945 card on ubuntu server

This may sound odd but I cannot use my network card (Intel 3945) with ubuntu 8.04 server but I can work with it perfectly in kubuntu 8.04. I am using a benq r55 and in kubuntu i only have to press the wireless switch and everything works perfectly; in the server nothing happens. I can't get sudo iwlist scan to show any networks.

When i run lsmod | grep iwl it shows that the iwl3945, iwlwifi and iwl_ieee (i can't remember the exact spellings) modules are loaded.

dmesg | grep 3945 shows that the card was started and there are no error messages.

iwconfig shows the card (I haven't configured it as yet)

Do I just need to configure it and see what happens?
