calculating throughput of a network


hello,
i have to make a connection and den generate traffic over it.while this happens, i hv to run another process in parallel that calculates the network parameters for the data being sent.i m doing this in linux through C programming.what i dont understand is how to monitor the data being sent through a port.
could sum1 plzz help me out...

Have you tried Wireshark, a network sniffer?

May help with what you need as you can filter by port and also save then generate reports on the output.

i dont need a tool..
i have to code one..
so wat i need is the basic idea on how to go about it...

I am not a programmer, I believe netcat may be written in C, perhaps you can get some ideas from that.
