Basic network config

Hi ive just installed slackware 10.2, and need some help setting up the network. Im at uni so i need to connect to the net through a proxy server which i think i know how to setup in the control center. What i cant work out how to do is to configure my IP and dhcp settings.

When i type ip in the console, i get shown the device eth0 so i assume that means my NIC has been detected correctly.

Under windows, it works fine on obtain settings automatically for both IP and the DHCP server, how do i go about configuring this under linux? Do i need to enter the DHCP address manually and if so how.

Thanks for any info
Jack

Try 'netconfig' from the command line. I use Fedora but this may be similar under slackware

DHCP is the opposite of manual configuration. To enable DHCP, if it isn't already, open the file /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf. In the section under the eth0 interface there is an option DHCP="xx". If you want it then put yes, otherwise put no. If it's yes it'll try to set up the eth0 interface at every boot, wether you want it to or not. If you set it no you can still enact the DHCP process from the commandlin by issuing
Quote:
dchpcd eth0
and wait a few seconds. If you want to set IP addresses manually (static) you can just set them in the same rc.inet1.conf file and it'll be configured with that address at every boot. Don't forget the netmask and gateway.
