automatic powerdown when all clients get disconnected?

hello! i'm setting up a debian-based lan for a school, i was wondering if there's an easy way to automatically shut down the server when no client activity (i.e. all clients have been powered down) has been detected over the last n minutes... i was thinking about some dirty cheap, broadcast-ping based probing and a counter, but i was wondering if anybody of you knows about some ready-to-run (and written by somebody more knowledgeble than me!) script which could get the job done... thanks in advance!
