assign IP address on your ubuntu linux

Good day to all!

Im a certified newbie into linux. I am using now ubuntu 9.04.
Now here is my question. Is it possible to assign your own ip address on your ubuntu desktop, I mean a fixed IP address?? Because everytime I start my computer, my internet service provider will automatically assigned a NEW IP address to my computer, but when i'm on windows the ip address is fixed.

I've installed and configured lampp and joomla. Im trying to learn how to use the joomla under ubuntu using only my computer as my local host. but when i restart my computer, the IP Address that is assigned is different to what I used when i installed joomla so I cant access my website even if im using the same computer when i installed it.

Is it possible to assign a fixed IP Address to my computer under ubuntu.

thanks.. .

by the way i'm sorry for the english

you are using DHCP? ask ISP for what reason your linux box gets dynamic IP. probably, bc ISP is bound to some specific windows thingy, say, computername in smb.

If you mean a public ip
Ask your provider for a fixed IP, and pay for it, or use dyndns
http://www.dyndns.com/
If you mean a private ip in your network, use a router, disabke DHCP, and set a fixed IP

repo, there are cases when ignoring DHCP and using static gray IP blocks you from accessing internet, like in my net(DHCP to get gray IP and PPTP VPN to get on the net with white IP, don't know how they do that but they dislike when i manually set static private IP and after some time my connection goes down and won't restore until i obtain IP from DHCP).
do you obtain public(white, internet) IP or gray(private subnet) IP? in second case, why worry if it comes dynamic? better ask your ISP anyway.

I think your problem is not really the IP. Your joomla, is it on the linux machine? do you access on the webpage with http://localhost ?

You should so. Then the only thing is to configurre apache2 correctly. You should have a look into the apache2 config files and set the /etc/apache2/apache2.conf and the /etc/apache2/sites-available and /etc/apache2/sites-enabled correctly

But when you access via http://localhost I guess the IP address shouldn't be important if your apache2 is configured correctly
