apache slow, only fast when i check "Use a proxy server....

Im running slackware 10.1 with whatever apache build comes with it. 1.3.33 i believe. It has very slow response time on my LAN. The home page should load instantly from my LAN machines however it takes about 5 seconds to load the page, it just sits there, then the page pops up. It is only fast when i check "Use a proxy server for you LAN" and put in the ip & port of the webserver, so obviously its something with a proxy setting somewhere. There are no firewalls on this LAN. Im using IPs to connect the webserver to DNS problems are non existant. Any ideas?

thanks
