A good text-only chat program

What is a good text only chat program for linux or is there even one at all?

yes, there's "one or two..." like BitchX, irc, ircII, xchat-text, epic,. irssi and loads more, certainly many more console chat clients that X ones, by a hefty majority.

while looking through my mandrake cd's i found BitchX (nice name by the way...)

someone was telling me, however, that irc and ircii have basically evolved into BitchX... any truth to that? or are they totally separate programs?
