gpl is probably why linux got where it is today 98% of top500 and monopoly over every computing stuff in our life wich i like
and bsdl is the reason sony and apple can use freebsd without giving anything back

wouldn hurt for someone to port some grub bootloader to phones and whatever software we need, to work with hardware already available,
bring the standards to the closed android world
theres a lot of e-waste, money we throw away, new hardware is nice but would be nice to use the old stuff too

except for 1 laptop wich is new and android phone, i only get used brand pc's, time tested standards, no specialty stuff, just for the reason i know it will work

Thumbs up

Before I got my Geeksphone, was thinking it was gonna have a bootloader but still being able to change is sweet. Cyanogenmod is installed there too.

I had a (cheap used) iPud that got set to dual boot thanks to Rockbox, that was cool.

I would consider a Librem 11 if it had an Azerty keyboard (it's Querty-only):

I would like to mount mini USB thumbdrives (like some newer
phones and tablets) plus maybe an SD slot or two with adapters...
then if I could also hook up my external burners, SSDs, &c too? O.O

more processing power comes with greater power consumption

like in cars, doesent matter if the engine is bigger normally aspirated or smaller with turbocharger
more power means bigger fuel consumption

it doesent matter, x86 or arm, you can have a powerful or a power efficient cpu, not both
it all depends on the specific cpu microarchitecture

this is what i believe after what i read

wow i was just thinking of an x86 UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) after watching and reading reviews of the AYA Neo!

https://liliputing.com/2021/02/aya-n...-new-year.html

As per desired specs/features for an x86 linux tablet/UPMC

#1 Zen 3 based 4/8 to 6/12 cores/threads CPU
#2 1-2 CU RDNA2 GPUs (whatever is min for 10bit HEVC/VP9 decode @ 4k)
#3 hardware/real QWERTY keyboard
#4 Dock for use as desktop PC with big display
#5 5G/Wifi6/BT
#6 USB-C fast charging
#7 VFM quality DAC for use as a DAP/music player ^^

Of course the above specs/wish is catered to those who type long emails, listen to music and watch videos not so much into gaming though i think 2 RDNA2 CUs could do mobile games easily?

Missed my chance

Something modern like that . That uses store bought batteries.

I can see rechargeable batteries but if it doesn't have a lithium (preferably with backups) so I'm not throwing away as much then just like flashlights I'm not buying batteries.

Recycling is a capitalist joke!

If you could have an x86-based Linux tablet, what would you want in it for specs: CPU (speed vs battery saver), RAM size, storage size, SSD vs EMMC, screen size, ports, keyboard (yes or no?)?

Just trying to get an idea what a Linux user would want in a tablet as opposed to a Android or WIndows user.
==============================

Intel made an $$$ agreement with Apple (taiwan TSC ARM) not to include a modem or touchscreen into their Intel i5/i7... processors.

Androids use a Playstation type graphics sound support. You might think of it like using Linux with SDL for multimedia instead of ASLA and Xorg.

---------------------

If you read that and though about it: you'd conclude you can't make an x86 based tablet unless you manufacture both a touchscreen (meaning protocols you know and support not needing an ARM chip proprietary support) and also a MODEM (which isn't for wifi it's for the telephone company, the differences and connections between the two are elaborate to say the least).

In other words: they locked you out. Taiwan makes small devices with all the features (cell laptops and pads)

and there isn't anything YOU at home can do about it. so relax and catch some rays

It would have to have a non 'touch' screen for me, as I haven't found a single one that works for me, so a keyboard & touch pad would be essential. Other than that, 4GB ram, at least 32GB storage, external storage expansion, built in wifi, built in sound, headphone/external speaker 3.5mm jack, microphone socket, & a minimum of 8" HD screen - & it wouldn't have to cost a lot!

But, basically, I don't need one - I use desktops, & laptops as portable desktop computers, (they don't even need to have batteries fitted).

I want a keyboard that rolls out the tablet. It must have 256GB of storage and an Intel i5XXXX (X means anything). 5, 6, 8 or 12 GB Ram. 64 MP camera with changeable lenses that come out of the box. It should have mobile data and offline docs. Game engines, IDEs, Terminals, Text editors and other similar things are pre installed.

So, this thread is 5 years old.
Back then the main argument for x86 vs. ARM was that there isn't enough GNU/Linux software for ARM.
How the world has changed since then.
