I ended up blowing out 17.2 and doing a clean install of 17.3. Right now I am piecing it back together with all the programs that I had added over the 2 years I used it. Not a big deal, just will take some time, possibly some of the things I added and didn't find useful won't be re-installed. The system was never truly down, thanks to having it dual boot with Win 7.
I had such a time using the Live CD/DVD that I had to make a fresh copy and do the install from that one.
In any event the trouble on waking up the machine from standby is gone, so problem solved!
Thanks for all your help, wish we'd have got it sorted out w/o doing a clean install, but Oh well!
I think it's a great idea to try and spend time trying to solve problems. But, sometimes, the solutions just don't want to reveal themselves and it becomes more bother than it's worth.
I'm glad you've got a working system up and running again!

Hydrurga,
Well......... I thought I had it sorted and now it's doing what it did with the initial attempt to upgrade to Rosa. IE: Once on SUSPEND it doesn't want to come back to life. The screen allows me to enter my PW, and after that I have a black screen. Other times it won't even do that. I DO notice that I am getting a "PCC Probe Failed" message on boot up. I saw this message on the Live CD which would hang, at times right after the message. This apparently is related to ACPI settings on the MOBO, I never had to change anything of that sort to make 17.2 run OK.
Only thing I know is to go back, again, to 17.2 and be happy with that. I wanted to send you a PM but couldn't figure out how to do it. I'm sure by now you aren't following the thread. But in the odd chance you are, that's where I'm at right now. What an ordeal! <sigh>
There are solutions available (Google "pcc probe failed") but I can imagine that you might be a little weary by now.
Will the problem be solved in Mint 18?
I would at least give some of the possible solutions a chance and see if you can fix it. Someone even suggests updating the kernel to 4.2.
I tried changing the kernel to an older version that only made it worse. Some posts I have seen say go the the 'recovery mode' and use 'nomodeset'.... Hmm I don't know how to get to the recovery mode for one, I'll have to search that one.
Yeah it's really frustrating to say the least. Really though, I saw that message about the PCC probe failing on one or two boot ups, but the system seemed to keep on booting so I didn't give it proper attention. One time using the Live DVD it did that and didn't boot... should have taken my cue from that I guess. I didn't take note of what the rest of the message is, something like 'loading 748048573' Realistically though I understand fully that there is an almost endless combination of hardware that can be put together and it's not reasonable to expect an OS to be "one size fits all" and work perfectly in every instance.Tough to make one that is current and backward compatible at the same time.
My MOBO is getting long in the tooth but I am able to accomplish what I want to do in short order and I have no intention of upgrading it unless it fails entirely. I am thankful that Acronis allows me to easily go back to the set up I had in about 7 minutes from start to finish, a definite plus!
As chaotic as the rest of my life might be, I DO like a sense of order on my computers, where I know things will work as they should and let me do what needs done without having to wonder "will this work?" I am the person that lies in bed thinking of things I could try to solve the problem <sigh>
If you know how to send a PM to someone please clue me in, I've searched all over and can't find a way to do it, I know it's there I just can't seem to figure it out on this forum.
Kind regards,
"If"
PS: I am surprised in all our postings, no one else has jumped in with suggestions.
You can get into Recovery Mode through Advanced Options on the Grub menu.
After you've tried that, I would try updating the kernel to 4.2. As you say, Acronis makes it easy to roll back if it doesn't work out.
If you want, we can go through all the suggested solutions for the PCC Probe Failed error one by one and see what gives. As long as it's not your production computer (i.e. important for your work), and you have some time, it would be worth giving this a go.
I was hoping that someone more knowledgeable than me (not too difficult) would step in - maybe one day they will, and the solution will have been in front of us all the time.
I think you may have to have posted a certain number of posts before you can send PMs but I'm not sure about that. You should see a "Send Message" on the person's profile.

Hydrurga,
Well it IS my production machine, but dual boot and Grub is NOT controlling the boot of both OS'S that's the beauty of installing Grub on the same partition as the OS. If one the MBR of Windows fails I can use Linux and conversely if Grub fails I can use Windows, booting both doesn't depend on Grub. I have to try and figure out which of the ways will work to reach the recovery console in Grub, seems like some say HOLD THE LEFT SHIFT KEY others say hit ESC repeatedly and still others say use both at the same time! lol
I'll keep at this, but it's a hobby not a vocation, thank Heavens! I am confident that there is a solution out there, we haven't found it yet. Like Thomas Edison and the light bulb, " I didn't fail 499 times, I just found 499 things that didn't work" ( paraphrased.. Sorry Tom! )
