It means you typed your password and it was trying to find it as a package. Did the other package install?

Just for the sake of testing type this into the terminal

ifconfig eth0 up

Let's see what happens.

Ok that just means it still doesn't see your internal network card. It looks like your driver might not be available for the kernel yet by default so we may need to compile it, but first just do a simple reboot of the laptop and see if anything changes network wise.

Thanks, I'll do that, but although I mentioned I have a laptop, I am doing this at present on the desktop. I will re-boot...

Ok the following is going to be a bit of work but looks like it will get your network card possibly working.

First step

Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic linux-headers-`uname -r`
Second step

Code:
wget -O- http://linuxwireless.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc.tar.bz2 | tar -xj
Third

Code:
cd compat-wireless-2012-07-03-pc
Fourth

Code:
./scripts/driver-select alx
Fifth

Code:
 make
Lastly

Code:
 sudo make install
After all this finishes you'll just need to do another quick reboot.

If you want more information on what i'm having you do I'm following this link.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/16519...net-controller

It's relative to ubuntu but Mint has some basis in Ubuntu so it's good info to follow.

Thanks for all your help. I think I did this okay, but the last time I used a command line was with my trusty Commodore Amiga 1200, sadly no-more, but it brought back the old feeling! After re-boot, it still seems to be the same, but didn't suggest I'd made any errors, but it did ask for my password a few times.

Thanks again

OK well no errors is always good.

Try typing this command just for fun:

Code:
sudo modprobe alx
