6.1 kernel, busybox, vesa framebuffer (simpledrm), ssl/ssh, alsa/sndio,
framebuffer vnc, Xvnc, vncviewer, wifi/eth networking. 30MB vmlinuz with all
firmware/modules and initramfs built in
Setting vncservers color depth to 16 bit, 10 fps, and bandwidth is low, usable
from a distance (remote), whilst the look-n-fell is ok/good. Realistically usable
even if your ISP caps upload speeds to 20Mbs as mine does. Full screen video
tends to remain comfortably below 5MB/sec (40Mbs), more often less than half
of that, more so if you settle for a 480 youtube playback choice.
Image is from a old/slow wifi net connected laptop, server is a vm within a
i5/8GB/Nvidia. laptop framebuffer -> Xvnc -> vncviewer ... servers vncserver
(within a kvm/qemu vm). Ram and cpu used on laptop is low (so good battery
charge life) as it only has to handle being fed pixels from the server, server
handles all of the downloading/graphics processing etc. to feed the laptop with
pixels (vnc).
I use a third party server, have our own household server, and also use my phone
as a vnc server (so can more easily network connect the laptop and have a gui
desktop whilst out/about if I don't otherwise vnc to the home server.
Many framebuffer posts tend to also use framebuffer/text programs on that, with
just fbvnc however you can connect/use so much more rather than struggling with
the likes of netsurf etc.
Of course the laptop reporting 140Mbs internet speed tests via wifi net connection,
or frame rates of 1000 fps ... is a illusion, just that the server is running at
... is reduced down to the 10 fps or whatever rate you set for vnc. Colour quality
when reducing from 1366x768x32 to 1366x768x16 is still adequately 'good enough'.
Regular 1366x768x4x60 (32 bit depth, 60 fps) reduced to 1366x768x2x10 ... is a
20 / 240 = 92% less of raw pixels data being conveyed/processed per second,
vnc compression, as sequential screens (frames) tend to be similar, further scales
down that data rate.
Still not able to post screenshots due to something amiss with the forums. Contacted the forum and they replied back and I gave them the info I had. Something about a missing "security token". Still not able to post pics. Anyone else having the same issue?
This is the window that pops up when I try to upload pics:
