any reason why it wouldn't? the biggest reasons why hardware is not supported is because:

It's Ancient and really obsolete (although functionally obsolete hardware is supported better than m$)

It's Brand Spanking New! and therefore on the bleeding edge... rest assured though, it *will* be supported soon!

Cool

Yes, you can. I'm running knoppix, which is a debian based distro and It comes with a bootable cdrom you can use to check to see how much of your laptop would work.

I'm using a dell inspiron 8600 (15.4 screen) with the ati 9600 pro video chip. The proprietary ati drivers can be compiled to work with the laptop. I'm able to use the wuxga screen res which is 1900 by something fine. Also the centrino wireless works fine with the linuxant driver wrapper (this part costs extra money but there is a free wrapper for it too). Doing the usual right now as I speak at a tmobile hotspot in starbucks, ripping cd's writing new resmumes icqing and surfn for jobs and info with no problems.

enjoy. PS if you need help just ask around.

i'm just asking because i'm trying to figure out what kind of laptop to get. I'm goin off to college next year. I wanna get a really nice one, and i wanna dual-boot linux on it. I've been trying to use Knoppix on my parents computer, and i really like it so far. The only thing is that i can't get my DSL to work. I've tried everything i can think of (i don't know much), and posted on several message boards on different websites, but no one has responded. Oh well.

So if i got a brand new prett-cutting-edge laptop, would it be able to run under Linux? How long does hardware have to be out (on average) before linux is able to support it?

i thought a lot of the newer hardware isn't supported by linux yet? Like the Intel PRO Wireless 2100 network card. I thought stuff had to be out for a while until someone could make a driver for it. Am i wrong in thinking that?

Usually not to long

Back 3 or 4 years ago that may be the case. Now days equipment is supported a lot quicker then before. Right now my 8600 has the centrino in it and I'm able to use the wireless networking as we speak using a wrapper driver. It's pretty safe to say that there are some things that even linux supports before windows does. For example full support of the new amd 48 bit chips has been available for linux for quite some time. Not so for MS Windows. Actualy the dell inspiron 8600 is less then a year old and it works pretty much out of the box with the knoppix distro. The only extra work needed was for wireless nic and the wacky 1900 res. If you want accelerated ati performance you can install the ati drivers from ati.

dush: your sig:

I still can't figure out how to pronounce SuSE.
Soo-z?
Soo-zee?
Zoo-ze?
Soo-ze?

Actually, it's German, and you're supposed to say "Soo-suh"

You may have misunderstood me. If something is a year or older (but not too old ), you can bet it's supported (unless a certain technology is involved that Linux has no support for). Plus, more and more hardware device drivers now include a Linux driver when they used to not (Printers, NIC's etc).
