Using a notebook with an internet connection at work and at home.

Hi,

This seems like a simple problem but I am having problems finding the right set of documentation or instructions. I have an IBM thinkpad running Red Hat 7.1, linksys pcmcia for dialup/ethernet connection. At work (university), I use dhcp to obtain a dynamic ip address, works great. We have just obtained Earthlink cable dsl at home and I want to revise my network configuration so I can use the cable dsl with my laptop while keeping the university setup.

I checked sourceforge and found a new version of netcfg. It allows for multiple network profiles. It seems like the solution but before updating netcfg on my machine, I was wondering if anyone has used it.

Many thanks.

how you do it will depend on if your DSL assigns static or dynamic,
but i think your current version of 'netcfg' will be sufficient

Hi bobr,

DSL is dynamic. Is it simply a matter of adding additional domains and the nameservers for earthlink?

If you get DHCP both at work and at home, you shouldn't need to do anything. Just setup your machine to get its ip from a dhcp server at boot. When you are at home it will configure from the router and at work it will configure from the dhcp server there. Your dns should also be set by dhcp if setup properly.
