White Screen of Death!

Hi, I was being guided by another person on the net to set up xwindows. After playing with XF86Config-4, I managed to stop the white screen (which can be escaped using ctrl-alt-backspace). Then I was told to change the default depth from 8 to 16 and do startx again. Now I get a shadowy view of the debian word, and the lcd screen starts getting bright white, till it's totally white. I reboot and now CMOS starts up with white screen. Everything is white, CMOS, Lilo, Debian, WinME on my LCD screen. However, when I plug a CRT monitor to my CRT port on the laptop, I can see everything clearly on my CRT(laptop remains white).

After editing a bit of the XF86Config-4 file, I am able to view Xwindows GUI with startx. However my PS2 mouse does not work well. When I move the mouse, it steers to the top right corner of the screen. I have a USB Logitech optical mouse which I plug into a PS/2-USB converter so I plug the mouse into my laptop's PS/2 port. But this is a small problem. My LCD screen is the main problem.

Does anyone know how I may solve this

OK.

The only times I've heard about a laptop LCD, an X server, and a white screen is when something very very bad is happening.

It can usually lead to irreparible damage.

Since Win ME is doing it too, I'm going to jump out on a limb and say there is a hardware problem. Call your laptop manufacturer and don't mention Linux.

I hope I'm wrong
