Sounds like you need to (re)install some video codecs... YouTube uses flash, so find a codec pack with that in it, or visit Macromedias site and download it directly... as for the others...not sure, sorry

check out medibuntu , its all the win 32 codecs that you need to play video. as Jonny K said you do need to install flash separately , here's a good article.

Using Firefox ???????????

Edit> Preferences> Content> (check box)Enable JavaScript
Edit> Preferences> Content> (check box)Enable Java
Edit> Preferences> Content> Advanced> (check boxes)Disable or replace context menus AND Change status bar text.

Also, Java should be version 6 (1.6), install:
sun-java6-plugin or java-6-sun-plugin

You must be root if using a terminal. If you open synaptic, it will ask you for the root password.

You need to be root to use apt-get
Also, did you installed a addon in firefox, which disables java, like noscript...

Lets start from the beginning.
In firefox, type
Code:
about:plugins
Do you see java?

No?
Install it
Code:
sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-fonts sun-java5-plugin
if this goes ok, do the following:
Code:
sudo update-java-alternatives --set java-1.5.0-sun
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Finaly disable all addons in firefox if any
tools=>add-ons

open synaptic
Code:
sudo synaptic
do a search for java, and install mozilla plugin

To rule out the possible FireFox config problem... try using a different browser... Try Opera http://www.opera.com/

You'll probably still need to install the flash plugin, but it may work for you.

EDIT: try what repo said first though...
