USB problem on Toshiba Tecra 9000

Hi,

I recently received an old Toshiba Tecra 9000 and installed Ubuntu on it. The installation went smoothly as always but for some reason my USB is not working...

I have tried plugging several different hardware on usb: mice, keyboards, flashing hardware etc. None them work, no lights on the devices, lsusb displaying:

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

When I plug my optical mouse its lights briefly flash then it just dies. Demsg says nothing about the mouse, but when I plug in my flashing device dmesg displays a bunch of errors (this happens on a machine with a working usb too, feature of the hardware).

The first thing that came to my mind was that USB must be disabled in bios, however Tecra has this minimalistic bios that only has 2 usb settings (both legacy support settings) and changing them has no effect on the problem.

I have the following modules installed:
usbcore 104316 4 ehci_hcd,usbmouse,uhci_hcd

I also did apt-cache search toshiba and found a few toshiba related packages which I installed without luck:
toshset - Access much of the Toshiba laptop hardware interface
fnfxd - A ACPI and hotkey daemon for Toshiba laptops
toshutils - Toshiba laptop utilities

Crawling the web I didn't find any topics about similar problems or Tecra specific problems, some other Toshiba models seem to have problems with USB but none of the sites mention Tecra 9000.

Finally I tried a Knoppix live cd and found that usb devices don't work on that either. However the guy who had this laptop earlier claims that usb used to work some time ago. He suggested recompiling the kernel and checking if there are some toshiba specific options that could be enabled.

Before trying that I decided to try asking if any of you have experiences with Tecra/know what might be wrong? I'm sceptical that recompiling the kernel helps but beyond that i'm running out of ideas.

Did anyone find a solution

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone had found a solution to USB problems on the Tecra 9000?

Thanks
Mark

You can try adding the "usb-handoff" kernel parameter to your boot
command line.
