upgrade directions for kernel

I am sure this has been asked but I am not quite sure how to ask it. From reading other posts I am guessing I need to upgrade my kernel from 2.4 to 2.6 to get suspend and stand by working on my gateway sd400. The reason I am not sure about how to search the forums for this is because I don't know if the more experienced linux folks call it "upgrading" or "re-compiling" a kernel, and the only HOW-TO docs I can find seem a little dated. Can someone please direct me to a starting point?

Thank you very much
J
