update the kernel and patch kernel


I have a inspiron 5100 and i need to patch it and recompile it.It my first time doing this so i someone nerves some what.Here the link i need to do http://home.earthlink.net/~xtrem1/Insp5100Dell.html


The reason i updateing my kernel is because i need my ampd monitor on my laptop..IIf everytime my x windows crash onme when i shut it down.All i see is power off.Would that hurt my laptop if does that?



Do i need to update my bois if i upgrade and compile and patch my kernel?I don't want to upgrade my bois for a good reason.

bios and kernel upgrades should be unconnected.

the web link you posted mentions nothing of upgrading the bios. unless there is a flaw in the bios that the linux kernel needs fixed you should be fine. the linux kernel should use the hardware for any bios version though. what makes you think you need to upgrade the bios?

Someone said that the bios is broke bios that the new laptop have.That why the battory monitor don't work on my laptop.It could be why my battory monitor don't work on my laptop.And when i turn off the power button it freeze after it halt on my laptop.

oh, well in that ase yes a bios upgrade is necessary, but it seems you knew that, so now I am confused as to the question.... what exactly is it?
