Touchpad and joystick not working

I do not know exactly what triggered this but I believe it may be the installation of dropline gnome. My system is a Toshiba Tecra S2 (sonoma platform) running Slackware 10.1 . I am running the evdev module. Here is the output for cat /proc/bus/input/devices

I: Bus=0003 Vendor=047d Product=1023 Version=0100
N: Name="Kensington Pocket Mouse Pro Wireless"
P: Phys=usb-0000:00:1d.0-1/input0
H: Handlers=mouse0 event0
B: EV=7
B: KEY=70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=103

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0001 Product=0001 Version=ab41
N: Name="AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio0/input0
H: Handlers=kbd event1
B: EV=120013
B: KEY=4 2000000 3802078 f840d001 f2ffffdf ffefffff ffffffff fffffffe
B: MSC=10
B: LED=7

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0008 Version=0000
N: Name="DualPoint Stick"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio4/input1
H: Handlers=mouse1 event2
B: EV=7
B: KEY=70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=3

I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0008 Version=2222
N: Name="AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio4/input0
H: Handlers=mouse2 event3
B: EV=f
B: KEY=420 0 70000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=3
B: ABS=1000003

The usb mouse is first in the list since I booted with it plugged in but even if I boot without the mouse plugged I still get the same problem. Let's say I do a cat /dev/input/event2 or cat /dev/input/event2 I do not get any garbage from moving the devices. Any input(from you people) would be appreciated.
