The 'L' letter boot problem with (F-J) Amilo D8830

I installed Mandrake Linux 10.0 Community Edition from Linux Format's DVD and the installation process went fine. When I try to boot to Linux LILO displays only the letter 'L' and hangs up. There are no digits to describe the problem.

I read from here that a fellow had the same problem and someone adviced to solve that by running lilo with -l (Linear) switch in rescue mode.

I tried it but LILO said "Fatal: Sector address 128990936 too large for LINEAR (try LBA32 instead)". Using LBA32 won't solve the problem.

I'm terribly frustrated with this issue!

From the Bootdisk-howto: http://electron.phys.dal.ca/Bootdisk-HOWTO-12.html
...
12. LILO boot error codes.

Questions about these errors are asked so often on Usenet that we include them here as a public service. This summary is excerpted from Werner Almsberger's LILO User Documentation, available at ftp://lrcftp.epfl.ch:/pub/linux/loca...lo.u.19.ps.gz.

(nothing)
No part of LILO has been loaded. LILO either isn't installed or the partition on which its boot sector is located isn't active.

L
The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started, but it can't load the second stage boot loader. The two-digit error codes indicate the type of problem. (See also section ``Disk error codes''.) This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters)
...

You'll want to boot up the install disk with the option 'rescue' to boot up the rescue mode.
See if you can access the drive at all. If Mandrake can find your home partition, it will be mounted on /mnt. It it can, chroot /mnt so your directory hierarchy matches your install.

Scan through the /etc/lilo.conf file. Make sure the root= and boot= lines are correct.

You will want to give us more information about your system. Such as how many drives. Where the root partition should be mounted. Did you write lilo to /dev/hda or the root partiton. Are the drives ide or sata, etc.

For some reason or another your URL doesn't exist. At least my IE 6 couldn't find it. Boot= and root= sections are alright.

My system (like I said in the subject) is Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D8830. It has one 80,0GB hard drive which has currently four partitions:

/dev/hda1=WinXP(NTFS)
/dev/hda2=/boot(ext3fs)
/dev/hda3=LinuxSwap
/dev/hda4=/(ext3fs)

My Master Boot Record contains NTLDR boot loader. I try to boot to linux using it. There is "bootsect.lnx" file in the root of C:. I made it using the dd command: dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/home/markus/tmp/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1. I transfered the file to C:\ using Explore2fs under WinXP.

I have really no ideas why it isn't working. I have used the same method with Win2k on my home desktop computer and it works fine.
