Mepis installation problem on F-S Amilo M3438
Hello,
I`ve been using Mepis on my desktop for a while now.Being rather fond of it,I`ve decided to try installing it on my laptop as well.My problem is that when I try running Mepis off the live cd it stops when it tries to load the cpufreq support giving a segementation fault error. That is when use the 2.6 Kernel
When I use the 2.4 Kernel it gets past that step(I`m assuming it downsteps the processor automatically or identifies it as a slower one since it keeps running properly)I do get Mepis to work in this case, however the 2.4 Kernel is unable to see any hard drives since both of them are SATA(in particular the infamous VT6421 ones which have made me hate VIA SATA with a passion)
My cpu is an intel pentium M 750,from what I`ve heard the centrinos generally tend to cause cpufreq module problems on downsteppings and such but in my case it fails to work with it at all.
I`m not overly experienced with Linux installation problems on laptops(since I`ve always used desktops in the past and I`ve installed numerous distros on them with very little trouble)but from what I`ve gathered it would be impossible or impractical to use the 2.4 kernel to see the sata drives since that would necessitate recompiling it,since mepis runs off the cd that is probably not an option
I`m guessing there is an option when running the kernel to define/alter the cpu frequency, but I`ve not seen it among the commands in the help menu
Loading at runlevel 1 still gets stuck at cpufreq loading
So I was wondering if anyone could help me bypass that cpufreq problem and manage to get the thing to work.I don`t mind if it doesn`t view the processor as a 1.86 Ghz or somesuch, that can probably be solved once the system gets to run
I`d really like to get this to work,I`m not that keen on Gnome desktop distros and my other favourite distro(fedora core) is certain not to work on this laptop
Thanks for any help!
Cheers,
Costas
PS:I apologise for this lengthy post, but Iwanted to write down as much information I could think

you need to pass the acpi=off parameter, if you look at the botom of the grub screem there is an area where you can put this in. then later you can add it to /boot/grub/menu.lst

Thanks for the help!
That seems to have solved the cpufreq problem
Unfortunately, while I can now run mepis live on 2.6,it won`t detect the sata drives so I still cannot install it
Don`t know if it is because of ACPI being disabled or not. Most other hardware seems to be detected fine enough though
Any ideas?

update:The chipset is the intel915PM-ICH6M
The new kernels apparently seem to be unable to detect sata drives on that chipset(and since the bios is worthless with no advanced options whatsoever no hopes of changing the drives to compatible)
It appears as though I`m stuck with no linux on my laptop until the next kernel comes out
More info:It seems like the cause is the obnoxious VT6421 software raid on it.Have to wait until mepis includes a new kernel with drivers for it(unless it is possible tointegrate the patch on the install)
