Systems failing to boot after installing xdm

I installed xdm hoping when X w'd start, it w'd ask for
credentials for login using graphic.
But it didn't happen so and when I rebooted the system didn't
boot up. It booted till the point where on screen Ubuntu is written.
After that nothing happened. Below the text (where ubuntu is written),
dots (....) were only there whose color changes between white and red.
That's all. 25 minutes passed but nothing happened.
Then I rebooted , selected recovery mode and uninstalled xdm.
Then only I was able to boot back on my system.

Why xdm didn't work as I expected?
I searched in net for the issue but couldn't get a solution.

Hi:

I'm not sure why xdm didn't work properly.
Sorry I don't have experience with servers.

These links may help you to understand why it didn't work-
