I didnt quite understand the article so i just typed sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-generic into my terminal but it didnt quite solve the issue...
What the article says is that you have to go to System > Administration > Softwarte Sources, click on the Updates tab and check the Unsupported updates box.
im using a HP Pavilion dv6000....since i installed ubuntu in my laptop the mute button on my keyboard is in orange color and no sound is there wen i play a song.... would really appreciate if someone helps me with this.....
I'm on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 running just-installed openSUSE 10.3 64-bit.
The sound is from an Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family).
I was able to get sound running by doing the following:
(1) Add a Repository (using YaST) for http with Server Name of download.opensuse.org , and Directory of /repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_10.3_Update . Yes, there's a colon after "multimedia"...
(2) Run YaST, and select Software Management.
(3) Add the patch alsa-driver-kmp-default (1.0.15.hg20071127_2.6.22.5_31).
(4) From YaST, select Sound. For me, everything defaulted correctly. The sound test was, literally, music to my ears.
thanks..
but i am not using opensuse...
i am using ubuntu...
i have been look at other forums and ppl are also having the same problem as me but i still cant find a way to get sound..
is there a need to install a driver or something like tat..
i did wad u told me but thnan there is still no sound coming out of the speakers and earphones..
In that case, something that you can try is to edit your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file by specifying a model for your laptop. If you go to this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto and scroll down to "Manually Specify Module Parameters" you'll find the step by step explanation to do it.
whoo...tats a very very very long article man on how to change the thing...i think i already did it but i its still not working is there anyway to install a driver for my sound card or something...
go to console as root.
run alsaconf
There he should recognise your driver.
Then type alsaconf store
This will store the configuration so that it works after reset also.
Also you can refer to this link where for that person also it was not working http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/host...D630-Etch.html
It could be a problem with mixer setting also. (It maybe very low by default). I prefer to use the aumix mixer as it gives an extra gain setting allowing me a higher volume than other mixers. you could tweak the mixer and see if it helps.
Also ensure your sound is not disabled in your settings in control panel etc.

Reason: to add detail about mixer setting also
