sound output only via laptop spaekers -- lineout not working

ASUS A6Q00V laptop
kernel 2.6.17
Gnome for handling my windows

After running alsaconf, sound works fine.
Exept sound is outputted only on the speakers of the laptop.
When I plug a cable in the LineOut jack, I get a nasty 'plugin-sound'
on my sound systems speakers, which I think is a clear sign for the jack
working, but no sound. Same thing with the headphone jack, only there
the speaker output stops when it's plugged in.

Code:
$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
snd_hda_intel 19668 2
snd_hda_codec 147312 1 snd_hda_intel
isofs 28548 1
pcmcia 39996 2
rtc 13812 0
usbhid 33924 0
ehci_hcd 32264 0
uhci_hcd 24268 0
usbcore 136704 4 usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd
ipw2200 108588 0
ieee80211 34824 1 ipw2200
ieee80211_crypt 6208 1 ieee80211
sk98lin 171104 0
yenta_socket 28492 2
rsrc_nonstatic 14080 1 yenta_socket
pcmcia_core 44304 3 pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic
dm_mod 60600 0
I use alsamixer v1.0.8

It doesn't offer me a panel to control the output drain. (Or does it and I just don't see it?)

Can anybody point me to something I should read?

Is line out a fancy word for "headphone", or does your laptop have 2 outputs on it. Can you use the headphone port? Or does it have a line out and no headphone hookups.

No, those are two different things. The headphone jack is a lineout, though, only with a higher output level and (obviously, see above) a slightly different routing behaviour.
