I've gotten to the point where his Belkin F5D6020 ver. 2 card is recognized, but I'm not able to get the ATMEL driver loaded. I followed the directions presented here and they are very complete, but Slackware stops at find the pcmcia/include when the MAKE CONFIG finds the kernel. The error I rcv is "pcmcia include does not exist" - with a notation to enter the correct path and try again.


I'm pretty certain that I included the kernel source when I did the initial install on this old Pentium 90 laptop. Has Cirrus Logic CL6729 pcmcia bus chipset - wired pcmcia card (3c589) is working.


What is missing? Do I need to install an external pcmcia-cs? or is there an error in the make config process that I can correct?

Man, that's an old version of Slack. A lot has happened since then. For the sake of security patches, I'd consider updating.

As to the issue, you'll need to have the card services package installed. Install it from your CDs. Also make sure that the kernel headers are installed.

I abandoned Slackware 8.1 and tried other distros based on 2.6 kernel - no go there either. The biggest issue is getting the PCI-PCMCIA bridge (i82365 with the Cirrus Logic CL6279 (also seen as PD6279)) recognized by the distribution. I've found that Slackware 8.1 finds a wired 3com 3c589 pcmcia card OK after running the PCMCIA script before running the SETUP script. So, I can get online with the 3Com card, and the Belkin card is recognized in cardctl ident, just not configured--couldn't get the Atmel driver to compile.

Mandrake 7.2 works great on this hardware, running Blackbox - pretty zippy. I have all kinds of small distros and older distros hanging around. Mandrake recognizes the CL6279 right away during installation. Again, the Belkin F5D6020 ver. 2 card is found (get the high beep, then the low beep) but not configured. I got the Atmel driver (older 2.x version) and it seemed to compile OK. I've added the Belkin card info in the /etc/pcmcia/config file and the atmel.conf file. Still getting the high beep then low beep. (BTW, Mandrake 8.1 didn't recognize the i82365/CL6279 bridge and was way too bloated for the old Pentium I/90 laptop, even with IceWM.)

dmesg sez it can't find the pcmf502rd module that every piece of documentation I've found says to include in the above "conf" files. No change on pcmcia restart or a reboot.

I even tried FreeBSD and OpenBSD -- they both found the CL6279 bridge OK and the 3Com 3c589 but not the Belkin wireless card. So, I'm sitting here with a working Mandrake 7.2 and am soooo close to getting the wireless working. Any thoughts or suggestions at this point? Thanks in advance.
